Here's Yochai Benkler discussing mass collaboration on the web. One thing I find interesting is that the gains from mass collaboration appear to be primarily gains accruing to leisure. Comments are open.
Mr. Benkler implicitly states a hypothesis: the ability to mass collaborate (and thereby the benefits from it) are in direct proportion to the ability to modularize the task at hand.
So what influences how much a task can be modularized? I think there has to be a degree of objective measure in the successively smaller bits and pieces. Words on wikis, for example. Or calculations on Seti@home.
Also, it would seem necessary to have some central, constructed mechanism for aggregating the individual contributions. I have no problem giving away my WiFi bandwidth when I'm not using it. But the sharing protocol has to be imposed on my network in order to do so. I don't know how to write a sharing protocol, nor impose it, nor do I have any incentive (monetary or internal) for doing so.
